Story of My Name 

I was born in fourth of September 1993, in a small clinic near Magelang City Square.  I was the first boy from a couple which live and work in Magelang. Both of my parent is Javanese, my father is from Semarang and my mother is from Magelang. Instead there is pure Javanese blood in my body but my I had very small eyes because of a “differences” of my eyes part, so I looked like a Chinese kid.  Actually it’s little bit annoyed to be call as Chinese boy. It was because in fact I am Javanese and it makes people sometime have wrong perception about me. Okay, lets past it, beside that I am still a cute boy until now. 

My parent give me a name “ Vincentius Bagas Adi Pratama “. They give me a name after talked with my grandfather and grandmother and they decide to give me that name. After decide my name and register it to make birth act, they also held “Bancaan” Ceremony to announce my birth, announce my name and give thanks to God. After those things that name is now official for me, and for my nickname you can call me Vincent. 

Some people said that name is a pray, maybe behind my name my parent has some hope for me. Now, I want to describe the means of my name. Vincentius is actually a name of a saint in Catholic tradition. Usually they give the saint name as a guardian, so the people can be blessed and protected by the saint.  The saint name also can be a hope to make the people which had that name to be like or had good manners like the saint.  In case of my name, Vincentius is a great priest, he has good manners, and maybe my parents hope that I can be a great man with good manners.  

The rest of my name came from Javanese words. Bagas is means strong, It maybe a hope of my parent to me, to be a strong and healthy boy. Adi is means valuable, it’s mean a hope for me  to be a man which give lot of benefit to others and be valuable person in the future. Lastly “Pratama” is mean the first, it’s I am the first child of the family.

Yogyakarta Special Region is one of tourism destination in Indonesia. It’s the second biggest destination in Indonesia after Bali.  Yogyakarta has various tourism attraction in its area, from the natural tourism attraction, cultural tourism attraction, and also special interest tourism attraction.  Yogyakarta offer many kind of natural attraction, it has beaches in the south, mountains, reservoir, forest, and many other natural object which can be potential for tourism.  In cultural attraction Yogyakarta has lot of candi, palace, cultural center  and also art center which can be interesting attraction for tourist.  Beside natural and cultural tourism, there is also special interest tourism attraction  which now has been emerge in Yogyakarta, the example of  special interest tourism which has been developed in Yogyakarta is such as; tourism village, sport tourism, adventure tourism, and ecological tourism.  All of those tourism attractions is spread in Yogyakarta Special Region area, and those attraction are the potential for developing Yogyakarta tourism. .

            Special tourism attraction now is one of developing tourism in Yogyakarta. It offers alternative choice for tourist beside the ordinary natural and cultural attraction.  Special interest attraction also becomes alternative ways of people to developed tourism business. Now, tourism business is not only managed by the government or high capital company but it also can develop by people with small capital. It’s the product of people which realize that tourism potential to increase the people welfare. In Yogyakarta the emerging of tourism developed by people or community can be seen from tourism village which emerge and growth all over the region. With tourism village which managed by the local people there is a way to gain more benefit from tourism for the people.

            One of the tourism villages which get on the spotlight is Bejiharjo tourism village. Bejiharjo tourism village is a tourism village which located in Karangmojo, Gunung Kidul Regency. It’s has been a tourism village since 2010, and has been awarded as the runner up of national tourism village award last year . The main attraction which offered in Bejiharjo village is special interest tourism attraction which based on nature. There are; Pindul Cave, Banyumoto Cave, and also Oya River.

            Pindul Cave is the main tourism attraction of Bejiharjo Village. Cave that located in Dusun Gelaran is a cave with underwater river on it. This cave has unique view; it has various kinds of stalactite and stalagmite in the cave. It also has three kind of zone inside, the zone is divide by the light intense on the cave, there are; bright zone, mid-dark zone, and total blind zone. The activity that can be done in Pindul Cave is cave tubing, it’s kind of cave exploration by following the river which flow under the cave. The cave tubing activities on Pindul cave are managed by several groups which based on local people which handle tourism activities on the area.

            The development of Pindul Cave is strated from the idea Subagyo and Karang Taruna (kind of youth group) of Bejiharjo Village. They realize that the cave is a potential resources in the village and can give good contribution for their village.  Then in October 2010, after planing and meeting for the tourism village concept, that day is the launching of Desa Wisata Bejiharjo or Bejiharjo Tourism Village or called Dewa Bejo. The tourism activity in that time is managed by POKDARWIS Bejiharjo or Bejiharjo tourism group. The result on 2010 is there are 98 visitors until the end of the 2010 with income around Rp.450.000. It’s quiet small result but it not bad for attractions which still emerge three month.

            In 2011, Pindul Cave development has very good progress. It get tourism development help from the government by PNPM Mandiri program. The management of tourism village get money around fifty million rupiah, the money was used to improve and buy facilities for the tourism activities, such as; life jacket, bathroom, safety kit, promotion, etc.  In the number of visitor there is also good progress, there are 4928 people visit Pindul Cave in 2011 and receive income around one hundred sixty two million rupiah.

            The progress of Pindul Cave still increase in 2012. Pindul Cave attract more visitor, even it’s more than ten times higher than the 2011 visitor number. In 2012 there are 59.312 visitors which visit Pindul Cave, with this visitor number Bejiharjo tourism group can get income around 1, 8 billion rupiah? It’s a massive number for tourism business which based on the local people.      

            The real income of the tourism activities in Pindul Cave actually is even higher. It because until 2012 there are three group which managed Pindul Cave, there are; Dewa Bejo, Panca wisata and Wira Wisata. The total income of those three group is around 4, 6 billion rupiah. It’s higher than the income of Gunung Kidul Regency which only 3, 9 billion rupiah. So we can see that Pindul Cave has make lot of money from the tourism activities.

            With the high number of income from Pindul Cave tourism activities, it’s interesting to see how the income distributed to the society. The income of the activity not only used for the management but also the society. The distribution of the income are 50% for the guide, 25% for the group officer, and 25% for the group saving. The composition of the group is consisting of around 60 guide and 20 group officer. The income is dividing by the end of the month. The money that received by the group member is depend on the income each month, but normally a guide can get money around 1, 5 million until 3 million for each month.

            The other group which manage Pindul cave Wira Wisata and Panca Wisata. Those groups also contributed a massive income from the tourism activities in Pindul. In 2012 Wira Wisata had around 63.683 people. It’s followed with total income around 2,4 billion rupiah. With those income the group can shared the income with 150 member of Wira Wisata, includes around 70 guides. In other side Panca Wisata which still new and emerge in October 2012 has average visitor around 3400 visitor each month. Panca Wisata has around 140 guides with group income around 100 million rupiah for each month.

             The main purpose of the tourism activity in Pindul Cave is to increase the welfare of the society. It can be done directly by increase the income of the people around Pindul Cave. People can join the group which managed tourism activities and get income from the tourism activities. People can work as a guide, officer for the group, or can sell some food and souvenir around the cave area. With the extra income that people can get, it supposed help increase the welfare of society which mostly is farmers.

                     The income of the tourism activity also can increase the welfare of the society indirectly. It can be done by the development of the infrastructure and facilities around the village. The infrastructure of the village is developed to make the mobility of tourist to Pindul better than before. The example is by repair the destroyed road access into Pindul. The effect is not only feeling by tourist because they get easy access, but also by the society because they can have good roads from their money without depending on the government. The facilities in the village also can be developed such as school and local clinic can developed from the income of tourism activity.

             The tourism activity also gives some benefit for the society. It gives some additional knowledge for the society. The example is for guide they will get guide knowledge learning, they also will trained to be good guide, the guide also will get survival and emergency training. With those skill and knowledge that they get it also help them develop their self. In other side there are also entrepreneurship training for people to trained and inspire them to open business and open more workforce for the society. Although those training not directly from the tourism group and just partnership program with outside society community but it also bring some good effect for the society.

            Unfortunately the good effect and benefit from the tourism activity in Pindul Cave isn’t feeling by all of the society. There are some people who feel they cannot feel the benefit and good effect of tourism activities. In other side they look some others people get much benefit from Pindul, so it makes jealous feeling in some people. This dissatisfied and jealous feeling makes some people try to get the benefit of the tourism activities directly. In other ways they gather and make new POKDARWIS or tourism group which the purpose is also managed Pindul cave and other tourism potential in Bejiharjo Village.

The new tourism group firstly also bring good effect for the Pindul Cave. In that time the one and only management is under Dewa Bejo, they that time cannot handle the high number of visitor which came to Pindul Cave, they see the new tourism group as patner in developing Pindul tourism activities. The relation between groups in that time is give benefit each other, even Dewa Bejo help the development of Wira Wisata and Panca Wisata. From that we can see that the relation between tourism groups is quiet good.

            Instead there are three groups which quiet succeed developing Pindul Cave, there are some people who feel they not gain any benefit from the tourism activity. Those people later than make new group named Taruna Wisata. Taruna wisata feel they also have right to develop Pindul Cave. Taruna wisata then see that there is opportunity to use unused building in the top of the cave. Then they meet and ask permission of the land owner of the top building.  The owner of the building mane is Atik Damiyati feel that she not asked permission of the tourism activity before, finally give permission for Taruna Wisata.

            The conflict emerges then when Taruna Wisata group claimed that they are the legitimate or legal management of the Pindul Cave. This claimed then makes i relationship between Taruna Wisata quiet bad with others group which has developed before.  The claimed of the land owner that she is the owner of Pindul Cave also raising the conflict because the others group such as; Dewa Bejo, Panca Wisata, and Wira Wisata feel that Pindul Cave is part of the village land. 

 The problem more complicated when the land owner and taruna wisata issued the close of Pindul Cave.  There are some reasons of this issue; the first is come from the land owner who feels she not asked about the use of her properties. The land owner also stated that she not give permission to use her properties to the other group. Taruna Wisata also issued temporary closing of Pindul because they want to renovate building in the top of the cave. They think for the safety of visitor it’s better to close the cave.

            The other group feel different way of closing cave issue. They think that the closing of the cave is unnecessary. They also argue that the closing of the cave is give problem to them, because they had scheduled tourist who want visit the cave. The legal issue of the land also complicated also the governmental body in village and sub-district confirmed that the tourism activities in the Pindul area is legal, because cave and river is includes into the state properties and cannot own by the private.  The groups also feel their work land will be robbed if the cave is close. So this make the conflict get raising and more complicated. 

             The conflict between groups in Pindul Cave surely brings bad impact for the society. The first effect of the conflict the bad image that Pindul Cave get from the image. The conflict has emerged in the media, not only in the Yogyakarta, but also outside Yogyakarta. The image also gone bad when visitor come to the cave and they seen the conflict image such as closed sign, or even people confronting each other. Surely wirh those image visitor will feel their threading and harmful to visit Pindul Cave. 

            The other bad effect is the society harmony that now harmful to be broken by this conflict.  The conflict between group in Bejiharjo village will make the relationship between people in the society are not good, especially between the group which had conflict. If the society unity is broken it will make the purpose of the society development failed.  It because of impossible to developed a society which not unity, with that condition it will not bring the important thing of human life, which is peace.

            The conflict in Pindul Cave must solve carefully and accommodate the people needs of this conflict.  The main purpose of this conflict solving is not only for the existence of Pindul Cave as tourism attraction but also for the better condition of Bejiharjo society. The conflict make the society divide into groups with different purpose and point of view. The conflict solving even it seems impossible needs to accommodate all society needs for the better condition in the future.           

The local government of Gunung Kidul, had a point to solve this conflict. First of all these conflict can disturb the social and economical in Bejiharjo, and it also can give a problem for the regency, because Pindul Cave now is the most valuable tourism attraction in Gunung Kidul.  Secondly, the political issue also infiltrate into the conflict, if the political factor infiltrate deeper in the society, it’s harmful to see much higher. So, with such kind of condition, the local government should take care of this conflict quick and carefully.

            The government can make some action to resolve this conflict of people.  Firstly it can be done by make clear regulation according tourism activities. From that we can control the tourism activities, so it will be ordered and can be synchronized with the government regulation.  Secondly, government can mediate the group which has conflict, give solution for both side. After that government can take an action which can help the people solve the problem, for example build cooperation which can be an organization to unity the differences between sides. Later than this organization can be the priority organization which managed Pindul Cave and other tourism potential, the management of the organization surely must consider the society empowerment value. So it will achieve the goal of society empowerment. 

            Society which involved in the Pindul conflict also must realize that conflict is not the best option for them. Both of the side must realize that the uncertain condition in the area could give them bad effect and may be resistant for their goal. Both of the side should calm down and not provoke each other to make the conflict worst. They can compromising their idea, point of view, opinion and solution for the conflict so the conflict not makes the society divide and make unsafely condition in the society.

            Compromising idea can be good solution for this conflict resolution. It’s started because from dissatisfied people tried to get the benefit from the Pindul tourism activities. Meanwhile the main purpose of the Pindul tourism activities is for the people. From this point, there is the same goal between both groups. With compromising each other maybe there is some solution for this conflict, even maybe it will emerge new idea to make the society empowerment from the Pindul tourism activities succeed.

            At the end, conflict in Pindul Cave should be managed well and has quick resolve. It’s because society need to be united to develop their environment. It’s important to make the society work together in good relation for their development.  So it will makes the society development achieved well. .

            Housekeeping is a department or division in the hotel which handle about cleanliness, fineness, neatness, completeness, and health in all rooms and public spaces, to make sure all the guest and employee feel safe and comfortable in the hotel.  Housekeeping department also has task to plan, and maintenance all the rooms, public space, and facilities in the hotel or accommodation service.    

        Being department in the hotel operation means housekeeping is important in the hospitality industry. Housekeeping department has responsibility to make sure that the guest feel safe and comfortable when stay at the hotel.  The responsibility can be seen from the assignment of the housekeeping to check every tools and facilities do not have problem or be harmful for the guest. With that responsibility, housekeeping department is being responsibility for the image of hotel service. It’s because the experience of the guest when they stay at the hotel and enjoy hotel services is determined by how is their condition and experience in the room they stayed.

            Hospitality industry is a service industry. Hospitality industry is a broad category of fields within the service industry that includes lodging, restaurants, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and additional fields within the tourism industry. As it’s part of the tourism industry the development of this business has tight relationship with the tourism business.

            Nowadays, tourism industry is being rapidly developed all over the world. This means there are lot of the development in the industry. These development makes there is must be a competition between the suppliers in the tourism industry. Hospitality industry as part of the tourism also face this challenges, with this competition which gone tighter by the time, it’s clear for the industry to increase the level of service.

            In facing the development of the industry, there some needs of academics on the tourism sectors. The academics in the tourism business is refer to  person who doing academics activities  related to tourism. The activity is such as studies about tourism, doing research about tourism, make project according to tourism, etc. The academics is neede to support the development of the tourism industry.

            The development of the tourism industry also makes the emerged of the tourism as knowledge and later than be a study. Tourism can be defined as a study which studied about theories of tourism, tourist activities, service provides by the society and its implication. With this definition is strengthening the status of tourism as independent study.

            As study there are three aspects that must have by the tourism. There are; ontology, etymology, and axiology. Those aspects are the foundation to study about tourism and also can be approach to make this study different with others.

             Ontology aspect is the aspect that analyse the studied object on the study. There two kind of object in a study, material object and formal object. Formal object is part of the material object that determines the analyses of the study. In the tourism studies the formal object is society, it’s makes tourism positioned as part of the social science because the focus of interest is human society life.

            In the tourism studies there some element which focused on the phenomena of tourism. There are; the tourist mobility, the activities of society which provides facilities for tourist, and the effect of the tourist mobility and society activities.

            The second aspect of tourism as study is epistemology aspect. Epistemology aspect is referring to the way to reach the truth of the science. Epistemology aspect is referring how to approach and analyse the study. In tourism studies there some approach such as; system approach, institutional approach, product approach and multidisciplinary approach. From that approach there will get some method to analyse the tourism as study. In the tourism there are two kinds of methods that can be use which are comparative method and explorative method.

            The third aspect of the study is axiology aspect. Axiology aspect is focused how is the study can give contribution and benefit from the science. Tourism as studies surely has its benefit and contribution from the science. The first contribution is to make the welfare of the society.  It’s not only about the money but it’s about human activities to fulfill their needs, human also gains lot of benefit from the activities that they do related to tourism, so it’s clear that tourism has contribution for the human life.

           

            From those aspects above there is a question about the relation between the housekeeping competences with tourism as study. This question also implies is the housekeeping competence is important for the tourism academics or not .And if it’s important how the importance of the competence is.

            The relation of the housekeeping competence and tourism as studies is the relation of the housekeeping as part of the accommodation service. The accommodation service is includes in the actives of tourism. It’s mean the competence of housekeeping will implies the accommodation service product quality. In the tourism studies the competence of housekeeping will help to understand and analyses the activities on the housekeeping department and other departments in the accommodation service.

            In the tourism aspect we can find how housekeeping is one of the tourism activities and it’s competence is important for the studies of tourism.   In the ontology aspect, we can find the housekeeping competence in the part of service provide activities. The service is provided by the accommodation provider, in this housekeeping as part of the accommodation provider which provides the service for the guest.

            In epistemology aspect housekeeping competence is can be a competence to analyse the activities in the tourism studies. Housekeeping competence can be media to use the approach in the tourism studies. It can to be use the system approach, institutional approach, product approach, and multidisciplinary approach. The system approach can be seen as the system of tourism, but housekeeping also has its own system. The housekeeping competence can help to analyse the phenomena in the housekeeping department or other department in service industry business.  The institutional approach of the housekeeping is the accommodation provider in this case hotel, hostel, Or other accommodation product, with the housekeeping competence it can one of the tools to analyse the institutional on the tourism studies.  There is also product approach to analyses, in this case is the service product that made by the housekeeping department.

            Axiology aspect on the tourism as studies requires that the studies must have contribution for the science. In this case there is housekeeping competence which can contribute for the technology and process to make people healthy with good environment in the hotel.  This competence can be improved by the development of the science, so this will inspire people to do research to find the best methods and tools for its improvement.

From those three aspect we can see that housekeeping competence is part of the tourism as studies. It has close relationship because housekeeping one of the activity of the tourism activities. The activities of the housekeeping are included in the service providing activities.   Besides that housekeeping also ensure that the activity of tourism will bring good benefit for the science and for the society.

There is also some benefit from the learning of housekeeping competence for the tourism studies. The first is about the management, housekeeping need a good management to make sure the objective of the department is completed. So by learning the management of housekeeping, it may give some knowledge to manage another tourism service product. Housekeeping competence also will give some point of view for the tourism academics when tries to analyse the activity in accommodation service, by the housekeeping competence it’s can be additional knowledge for studied and analyse another department or service.

 With the benefit and relationship with the studies, we can conclude that housekeeping is important competence in the rapid development of the accommodation service. In the tourism studies housekeeping competence can be tools to analyse and understand the phenomena which happen in the department or in the hotel activities. The analyses of the housekeeping department can be media to find the good management way to manage the department. 

At the end housekeeping competence is not only for the people who work in the housekeeping department or in the hotel operation system. It’s also important for others which related with the service industry.
